In an effort to promote sustainability and eliminate plastic use, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) has launched the "One Plate, One Bag" initiative at the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj's Triveni Sangam. The campaign aims to replace single-use plastics by distributing cloth bags and steel utensils to pilgrims and vendors.
The initiative was officially introduced by RSS Sah-Sarkaryavah Krishna Gopal at Sector 18 on the Old GT Road. According to Murar Tripathi, the Prant Prachar Pramukh of RSS, over 70,000 cloth bags have already been distributed from six designated locations. Additionally, more than 2 million steel plates and glasses have been collected nationally to support the cause. These items will be used at food stalls and community kitchens across the Mela grounds, significantly reducing plastic waste.
Key Objectives of the Campaign
The "One Plate, One Bag" campaign is driven by the following objectives:
- Promoting Eco-Friendly Practices: Encouraging pilgrims to use reusable steel plates, glasses, and cloth bags instead of single-use plastic items.
- Raising Awareness: Educating people about the harmful effects of plastic on the environment and the importance of adopting sustainable alternatives.
- Setting a Precedent: Transforming the Maha Kumbh into a model for large-scale, eco-friendly events, inspiring similar initiatives globally.
Impact on Pilgrims and the Environment
With millions of pilgrims attending the Maha Kumbh, the shift to reusable items is expected to have a significant positive impact on the environment by reducing plastic waste. By distributing cloth bags and steel utensils, the RSS aims to instill a sense of responsibility among attendees to protect the environment while participating in this spiritual gathering.
“Every individual must take this as their duty, not just for the Kumbh but as a way of life,” emphasized Krishna Gopal
The "One Plate, One Bag" initiative underscores the commitment to making the Maha Kumbh 2025 a sustainable and environmentally conscious event, setting an example for future gatherings worldwide.
Prominent Support and Government’s Call for Sustainable Practices at Maha Kumbh
The launch of the Maha Kumbh was graced by prominent RSS leaders, including Rajendra Saxena, Kshetra Marg Pramukh, and Ramesh Kumar, Prant Pracharak of the Kashi region, underscoring the strong support and commitment of various stakeholders to the success of this grand spiritual gathering.
Adding to this organizational backing, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath emphasized the significance of eco-friendly practices during the event. While extending his heartfelt greetings on the occasion of Makar Sankranti and the first 'Amrit Snan,' he urged pilgrims to avoid single-use plastics and adopt sustainable alternatives. This appeal for environmental responsibility highlights the government’s dedication to fostering a cleaner and greener Maha Kumbh.
